Factors promoting and inhibiting the functioning of core groups on Cass’ MSc Management and FTMBA programmes

This report presents the findings of a content analysis of the diaries of individual members of project groups from the 2008/9 cohorts. It is a qualitative piece of research that provides insight into the group dynamics of new, multi-cultural groups that have no formal boss and the difficulties they face as a consequence.

Especially amongst the younger MSc students there are numerous instances of conflict, dominant individuals attempting to impose their views, autocratic leadership, personality clashes, free-riders and psychological withdrawal.

We estimate that approximately 20% of the MSc and 10% of the MBA groups are largely dysfunctional. Nonetheless, the diaries also reveal that the group experience is a rich source of learning about group dynamics and process and seen by the majority as a valuable learning experience albeit often painful. As Sylvia Downs has stated "getting ideas wrong can be a valuable aid to developing understanding".
